I came by the name after asking a Buddist friend to give me a new name. After several moments thought he told me all he could think of was Dakini. I asked who she was and also researched her and decided that my friend was right and that the name suited me. I feel very honoured to have been given this name so when I started my business, I knew it had to have the name as the business. Dakini are referred to as Sky Dancers (khadroma meaning Sky-traveler), appearing in many different guises. 'Sky' refers to emptiness and the dakini travels in that emptiness; that is, she acts in full realization of emptiness, absolute reality. The concept of the Dakini is highly developed in Tibetan Buddhism and many images and stories of the Dakini come from that culture. However the spirit of the Dakini is trans-cultural and is not tied to any historic period. A Dakini can be a human woman who has realized her true nature, or a non-human female or goddess, or a direct manifestation of enlightened mind. Dakini also refers to a class of beings born in the pure realm of the Dakinis. Our Studio
All our products are made to high quality in the sanctuary of the small studio on the Grand Union Canal. The peace and quiet of the canal (apart from the odd travelling boat) provides a stress free environment which more than makes up for the limited space for my stock! Therefore, not only will you be assured of great quality and dedication to products and designs, you know where is was created and brought together as well! Artist’s Statement Having started my business by accident, through inspiration by a family relation, I soon realised I was going to have to make this a business to ensure I could continue. Since then my business grew and today I'm still designing and making new products specific to orders from my clients and for general sale. I work with Vegetable Tan Leather as well as other, softer leathers in the form of suede, hair-on skins, to name some. I make handbags, although I do other, leather products including belts, leather bound notebooks and more. I am always looking for new ways in which to use leather in new products. I also undertake repairs of leather products where possible and work closely with the customer to ensure they are totally satisfied and the repair is the best it can be. I gain inspirations from fashion markets, seeing trends, recreating that in my work. There are endless handbags wandering the markets with their owners so I have plenty of inspiration seeing what potential customers carry with them. But I also like to do unconventional items as well, when inspiration allows! As I personalise my products I usually get specifications from customers who provide me with additional inspiration and designs. At the end of the day, its all about what the customer wants and I do my best to ensure that they are satisfied with the outcome as well as the knowledge that what they are getting is a one off, personalised design!
